Sage Gorakshnatha of Nepal, a disciple of Matsyendranath, is the modern founder of Laya yoga tantrika. Laya means to “re-absorb” “fusion” “dissolution” and as a Yoga system means to re-absorb all of the energies and forces normally dissipated in daily living.
Laya Yoga is an ancient form of meditation, with concentration on energy centers or chakras. There are five main energy centers in the spine and two in the head. Laya yoga attempts to locate these energy centers and channelize them through meditation. Laya essentially means to dissolve all karmic patterns or conditioning and merge into the transcendental reality. It also means deep concentration and making an effort to overcome the ego, thereby rising to a higher state of consciousness, called Turiya.
The student must have profound knowledge of Raja Yoga, Sankhya and Tantra philosophy. It involves the arousal of Kundalini Shakti, its control and conversion into higher forces and powers. Tejas and Ojas (higher forces) are produces through these practices and the highest of all emotional-mental ecstasies are created by these techniques. Like all the higher aspects of Yoga, these practices must be undertaken with a competent Guru who has the personal experience of the arousal and the control of such shakti. Continue reading

Sexuality is closely related to spirituality in several ways. In its negative aspects of lust, sexual excess, degradation and rape, it appears as the antithesis of spirituality, and in this light it has been seen in the Christian tradition. However, in its positive aspects our sexuality can open our heart to love, and enable us to have experiences similar to meditative states and mystical bliss during or instead of an orgasm and its afterglow. In a less obvious way, sexual energies can be channeled upward to develop our energy centers or chakra system and higher energy bodies. According to esoteric and yoga teachings, this is all part of our spiritual evolution.
The idea of celibacy for priests, nuns and monks is to spiritualize sexual energies as in meditation, rituals and other devotional practices. Kapicitta is a term occasionally used by the Buddha to describe the agitated, easily distracted and incessantly moving behaviour of ordinary human consciousness (see for example Ja.III,148; V,445).
Once he observed: “Just as a monkey swinging through the trees grabs one branch and lets it go only to seize another, so too that which is called thought, mind or consciousness arises and disappears continually both day and night” (S.II,93). Anyone who has spent even a little time observing their own mind and then watched a troop of monkeys will have to admit that this comparison is an accurate and not very flattering one.
On another occasion the Buddha said that a person with uncontrolled craving “jumps from here to there like a monkey searching for fruit in the forest” (Dhp.334). In contrast to this the Buddha asked his disciples to train themselves so as to develop “a mind like a forest deer” (miga bhutesu cetasa, M.I,450). Deer are particularly gentle creatures and always remain alert and aware no matter what they are doing.

1. Root Chakra (Muladhara): The memory center, muladhara, located at the base of the spine, creates a consciousness of time through the powers of memory. A person lives predominantly in this chakra during the first seven years of life, acquiring language skills, relationships and cultural ways.
2. Sacral Chakra (Svadishthana): Once the ability to remember has been established, the natural consequence is reason, and from reason evolves the intellect. Reason is the manipulation of memorized information. We categorize it, edit it, rearrange it and store the results. We open naturally into this chakra between ages 8 and 14. The Foot Chakra (which splits into the arch of each foot) is also considered part of the Muladhara as its energy moves down through the legs and into both feet. It represents the earth. It is responsible for flowing the energy to and from your physical energy system into the earth. This is your grounding point where the energy of your body is transformed into earth energy and the reverse.

VITALITY AND MAGNETISM
The vitality coursing along the nerves must not be confused with what we usually call the magnetism of the man – his own nerve-fluid, specialized within the spine, and composed of the primary life-force intermingled with the kundalini. It is this fluid which keeps up the constant circulation of etheric matter along the nerves, corresponding to the circulation of blood through the arteries and veins; and as oxygen is conveyed by the blood to all parts of the body, so vitality is conveyed along the nerves by this etheric current. The particles of the etheric part of man’s body are constantly changing, just as are those of the denser part; along with the food which we eat and the air which we breathe we take in etheric matter, and this is assimilated by the etheric part of the body. Etheric matter is constantly being thrown off from the pores, just as is gaseous matter, so that when two persons are close together each necessarily absorbs much of the physical emanations of the other.
